Ben Murch created this charming saltbox, and his Dad, Bruce, handcrafted the miniatures for the house.

This cabin is constructed of high quality Southern Yellow Pine, and the siding is made of wormy hickory. This single-nest birdhouse is functional with several features that we include in all our birdhouses such as:

  • 3/4" solid pine construction recommended for insulation from both heat and cold.
  • Thick bird openings and no perches outside of bird holes, which protects small songbirds from larger predators.
  • Ventilation along eaves to keep birds from suffocating heat.
  • Removable roof for easy clean-out in between bird families.
The basic box of this house is made of Southern Yellow Pine. The window and door frames are cut from red oak. The siding is made of individually cut planks of wormy hickory, with the unique little holes from wood-boring insects that have become a highly desired feature in hickory and chestnut woodworking. The base dimensions are 13" x 14" and the house is 18" high. Not included with this birdhouse is the lazy mutt that managed to find her way into these photos!

Ben & I strive for the kind of detail which makes a birdhouse unique.

The miniatures are all handmade. The white picket fence was constructed from scratch, as was the mailbox, with the little red flag mounted on the side. The potted tree is actually a sprig of real Spruce from one of our trees, dipped in polyurethane to remain green forever!

The chimney is made to look like stucco. The entire house was treated with six coats of polyurethane which will last for many years. You can either spray it with additional coats over time, or let it weather naturally as the poly wears off.
